What are your missed calls actually worth?
Three numbers. The answer is the money walking out of the business every month while the phone rings out. Nothing is sent anywhere and nothing is stored.
The calculator
Put in what you actually know. If you are guessing at the first number, your phone log has the real one.
Rang out, voicemail, or you saw it too late.
What a typical job bills, in dollars.
A percentage. Most trades land somewhere between 25 and 60.
Why the third number matters
Most calculators like this one skip it, and that is how they produce numbers that make you distrust the whole exercise. A missed call is not a lost job. It is a lost enquiry, and you were never going to win every enquiry you answered either. Leaving the close rate out inflates the answer by two or three times, which is great for selling something and useless for deciding anything.
The number above is also a ceiling, not a forecast. Catching a missed call gets you the chance to quote. It does not get you the job.
When this is worth fixing, and when it is not
Worth it if calls land while your hands are full. On a roof, under a sink, mid-cut, driving between jobs. Those callers are not leaving a voicemail, they are calling the next business on the list, and a text inside ten seconds is often enough to hold them.
Not worth it if you already answer nearly everything. If the number above came out small, it came out small, and nobody should sell you an automation to fix a problem you do not have. That is the point of showing you the arithmetic instead of a case study.
It is also not an answering service and not a receptionist. It sends one text so the caller knows they were heard, and it buys you the time to ring back. If what you actually want is something that picks up and talks, that is a different thing and we wrote about it in AI receptionists for small businesses.
Questions people actually ask
How do I calculate what missed calls cost my business?
Multiply the calls you miss in a week by your average job value, then by the share of enquiries you normally win, then by 4.33 to get a month. The third number is the one people forget. A missed call is not a lost job, it is a lost enquiry, and you were never going to win all of them.
What is missed call text back?
An automatic text that goes out the moment a call rings out, so the caller gets something back within seconds instead of ringing the next business on the list. It does not answer the phone and it does not pretend to be you. It buys you the time to call back.
Does missed call text back actually work?
It helps most where calls arrive while you physically cannot answer, on a roof, under a sink, mid-cut, driving. It helps least if you already answer nearly every call, and in that case nobody should sell you one. The calculator above will tell you which of those you are.
How many calls does a small business miss?
It varies far too much to quote an average honestly, and anyone who gives you one picked it off a marketing page. Your phone bill or call log has your real number in it, and that is the only one worth putting in the box.
Is there a free missed call text back option?
There are free tiers, and they are usually limited by message volume or tied to a platform you then cannot leave. The thing that actually matters is whether it runs on a phone number you own, because a number you do not own is a number you can lose.
